Summary
Plans, organizes, and directs the academic, clinical, and administrative elements of the Nursing School. Participates in recruiting and selection of faculty and staff.
Distinguishing Career Features
The Associate Dean for the Nursing School is an academic management position that administers the programs and courses offered culminating in certificates, degrees, and the pathways to licensure. These programs and curriculum are supported with clinical simulations and practicum. The Associate Dean is responsible for complying with the guidelines and criteria established by the Board of Registered Nursing and national League of Nursing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
1. Plans, organizes, and directs nursing education as well as closely related disciplines. Assures compliance with BRN, NLN, and ACEN CSHA, and participates in developing policies and procedures related to the approval and/or accreditation of these and other healthcare programs.
2. Oversees the recruitment, selection, admission, and academic progression of students in the program. Monitors satisfactory academic progression and reviews students’ records for advancement to higher levels of nursing education, e.g., LVN to RN
3. Establishes standards for academic and clinical performance for permanent and adjunct faculty. Assures that faculty maintains required licensure and clinical credentials.
4. Facilitates the development of revised and new curriculum and program elements that stay current with State requirements for nursing practice.
5. Directs and participates in the preparation and assignment of class schedules and teaching assignments. Supervises and evaluates performance of assigned staff and monitors the credentials and teaching load of faculty.
6. Initiates, maintains, and renews articulation agreements with universities. Serves as a liaison between the college and health care industry serving the community for planning, scheduling, and coordinating clinical facility use agreements.
7. Develops, assembles, and recommends annual budgets by researching, reviewing, and analyzing historic information and projecting future needs. Controls and authorizes expenditures within the limitations of approved budgets.
8. Provides leadership for program review including process improvement and program development, systematic assessment of student progress and learning outcomes. Directs and participates in preparation of a variety of narrative and statistical reports,
records, and files related to Nursing and healthcare practice and program accreditation.
10. Conducts classroom lectures and discussions on nursing theory, practicum, and laboratory simulations.
11. Initiates and participates in sourcing and preparing grant proposals. Administers grant awards.
12. Collaborates with faculty within and outside of Nursing, to advance the program and blend other allied health care education and training.
13. Attends continuing education and conferences to maintain licensure and provide creativity and innovation to the Nursing Program.
14. Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
15. Advocates for the needs of the division and communicates concerns with Executive Dean and/or administration.
16. Participates in recruiting, interviewing and selecting nursing faculty and staff.
17. Directs, supervises, and oversees the routine operations and delivery of instruction for the department.
18. Coordinates, develops, maintains, and implements program, District, and state policies, rules and regulations related to the nursing program.
19. Serves on department and campus committees related to the duties of the job. Represents the College on boards, committees at local, state, and national level to promote and support nursing instructional (Associate Degree Nursing) programs.
20. Oversees orientation and tenure review evaluation process of new faculty and tenured faculty.
21. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
22. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.
Qualifications and Physical Demands
Knowledge and Skills
1. The position requires specialized professional knowledge of nursing theory practice, principles, procedures, methods, and protocols.
2. Requires advanced knowledge of the laws, codes, regulations, and practices related to nursing including BRN, NLN, and requirements.
3. Requires working knowledge of the principles of program leadership, supervision, and staff development.
4. Requires in-depth knowledge of the State laws and regulations related to licensure, certification, and accreditation.
5. Requires knowledge of and skill at using computer-aided applications such as those used for documenting patient activity and recording statistics.
6. Requires well-developed human relations skill to build an effective team, conduct lectures, work productively and cooperatively working with faculty and nursing students, and to conduct in-service clinical training.
7. Requires sufficient math skills to perform statistical tests. Requires advanced writing skills to prepare diagnostic reports.
Abilities
1. Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.
2. Requires the ability to carry out the objectives of the position and perform a full range of advanced professional nursing skills including, but not limited to examination, diagnosis, treatment, and invasive procedures as authorized by nursing practice.
3. Requires the ability to recommend innovative changes to the program and convert emerging trends in nursing practice to curriculum and practicum.
4. Requires the ability to prepare professional narrative and statistical reports.
5. Requires the ability to set up, organize, lead, and perform health care services in a clinic or acute care environment.
6. Requires the ability to demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity of staff and students.
7. Requires the ability to maintain all necessary licenses.
Physical Abilities
1. The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.

Licenses and Certificates
May require a valid driver license. Possess a current and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California issued by the Board of Registered Nursing.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, D.E.I.A
The minimum qualifications for a health services professional with overall responsibility for developing and directing student health services shall be a valid, current California license as a registered nurse, and either of the following:
A Master’s degree in nursing and a California Public Health Nurse certificate; or
A bachelor’s degree in nursing, a California Public Health Nurse certificate, and a master’s degree in health education, sociology, psychology, counseling, health care administration, public health or community health
Two years' experience teaching in a pre or post licensure registered nursing program. One year's experience as an administrator with validated performance of administrative responsibilities. One year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience direct patient care as a registered nurse. Or any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom and campus.
