About the Opportunity
East Carolina University (ECU) is seeking its next Dean of the College of Engineering & Technology. This role provides an exceptional opportunity for a collaborative, creative, and visionary leader to advance a college deeply committed to innovation, applied research, and economic impact.
The next Dean will join ECU at a pivotal moment in its evolution as a national model for student success, public service, and regional transformation. Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and will provide strategic leadership to its four academic departments: Computer Science, Construction Management, Engineering, and Technology Systems. The dean will also grow and support the College's research and outreach initiatives, including the Center for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering.
The Dean will guide the College in expanding student success and experiential learning, enhancing resources to support faculty excellence and innovation, strengthening partnerships with industry and government, and advancing a growing research and discovery agenda. This is a hands-on, visible leadership role that will shape the next chapter of growth for one of ECU's most dynamic and impactful academic units.

About the Team
The College of Engineering and Technology (CET) offers in-demand degree programs that prepare students for rewarding, lifelong careers. CET is a student-centered college in which faculty know students by name, delivering a relationship-rich education to every student in every degree program offered. The college provides high-quality instruction, research, outreach, and engagement programs through a hands-on, technology-intensive education. Engagement with business, industry, and the community enhances the CET programs, equipping students with cutting-edge skills and knowledge that make them highly employable upon graduation.
The college is home to 3,501 students across four departments- Computer Science, Construction Management, Engineering, and Technology Systems. The college is supported by 121 faculty and 151 staff.
The Dean's Office provides leadership, support, and administration for programs and services that benefit the College of Engineering and Technology. The Dean's Office works closely with faculty on new program development, faculty hiring, appointments, and positions as well grants, contracts, and budgetary items.
About the Role
The Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. This hands-on Dean will be expected to bring cohesion to the four departments of the College and integrate the mission of the College with that of the University. This academic leader will provide strategic, collaborative leadership, promoting the importance of engineering and technology development throughout the University and representing the College's departments and programs to both internal and external audiences.
The Dean will be expected to lead with a focus on growing the College's research productivity and funding, student enrollment, and external partnerships. The Dean will oversee strategic planning, advancement, and budget development, while guiding resource allocation, research, service, outreach, and administration. As a leader who provides inspiration for advances in teaching, research, and service, this Dean will be known for supporting shared governance and promoting a collegial environment.
Core responsibilities include: provide visionary leadership to advance the College's mission, academic excellence, and strategic goals; advocate for the College's interests across the University and externally, building support and securing resources; foster high standards in teaching, advising, scholarly research, funded projects, and professional service; recruit, develop, and evaluate department chairs, associate deans, and other key academic leaders; oversee faculty affairs, including appointments, tenure, promotion, and professional development; ensure compliance with University policies, procedures, and academic governance guidelines; administer and strategically manage the College's budget, personnel, and physical resources; drive program growth, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and with external partners; serve as the chief public representative for the College, strengthening relationships with alumni, industry, and community stakeholders; and partner with University Advancement to support fundraising efforts and steward donor contributions.
Minimum Education, Experience, & Skills
Earned terminal degree in a discipline represented within the College or a related field. Scholarly and professional credentials meriting appointment as a tenured full professor in the College of Engineering & Technology. Demonstrated record of academic leadership and administrative effectiveness, with experience in strategic planning, budgeting, administrative processes, academic policy, fundraising, and faculty and staff recruitment and retention. Evidence of commitment to shared governance, collaborative decision-making and academic excellence.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
National reputation as an educator and scholar in engineering, technology, or a related field. Demonstrated success in expanding research productivity and securing external funding. Experience building partnerships with industry, government, and alumni. Proven ability to advance fundraising and development initiatives. Collaborative and transparent leadership style that promotes trust, innovation, cohesion across diverse departments, and teamwork. Commitment to student access, success, and applied learning. Visionary mindset to position the College within a rapidly evolving technological and higher education landscape, including leveraging AI and emerging technologies to enhance academic excellence.
